Grand Theft Auto: San Lorenzo

Thanks to Alice’s vigilance I now know the story behind Thursday night’s dose of action movie. She found a mention of the chase in the local paper and snipped it out for me. Isn’t that sweet?

From the Daily-

Man arrested in robbery, carjacking

SAN LORENZO – A 19-year-old man was in custody Friday on charges of robbing a San Lorenzo liquor store at knifepoint and then hijacking a taxi to make a short-lived getaway, authorities said.

Alameda County sheriff’s Lt. Dale Amaral identified the arrested man as Miguel F Ibarra of San Lorenzo. Hr was being held at Santa Rita jail in Dublin on multiple felony charges of robbery and carjacking.

Authorities said a man armed with a knife robbed Arroyo Liquors, 15821 Channel St. in San Lorenzo and several of its customers about 7 p.m. Thursday. He fled the store and carjacked a passing cab.

Sheriff’s deputies responding to the area arrested Ibarra after a 10-minute pursuit.

Some notes here:

  • That liquor store is IN the mall the taxi turned into. That means he must have robbed the store, grabbed the cab, drove it almost to the freeway, then turned around, drove BACK to the mall, and down that residential street behind the mall. Then he came back (Alice says there is no outlet there so he really had no choice) through the mall, and back towards the freeway. Since I saw about 3 minutes of it, I guess I saw 1/3 to 1/2 of the action. Woo!
  • He was only driving like 30 mph. Why so slow? Someone was speculating the driver may have still been driving… but then wouldn’t the charge be kidnapping?
  • “deputies responding” doesn’t really quite describe what happened. That had to be almost every cop in San Lorenzo!

  1. Cooooooooooooooooool.
Ari also encountered “police activity” a couple months ago on the San Leandro/Union City border.
But it’s even cooler to hear your account PLUS the “news release” of it!

Thanks for bringing this saga full-circle.
