It Hops, Man!

Over the weekend Diane and I were driving on the freeway, and we saw a car with some serious hydraulics.

This guy was bouncing his car like four feet in the air, while driving at 70 mph. Sparks were flying off the tip of his muffler as he and his passenger bounced along, in the left lane. It was pretty entertaining.

Then the real show began- on one of his hops, there was this loud POP noise, and his whole car tilted forward and to the right. The car swerved out of control, first towards the median, then across every lane as the car slid to the side of the road. Sparks flew from the whole right side of the car as the front wheel seemed to disappear. Did it come off completely? I couldn’t see.

No one collided with him. As the rest of us sped past him I could see every driver relieved and laughing at this guy.

IT HOPS, MAN! IT HOPS!

The Bush Record on the Environment

If you can’t afford to send your kids to a private school, I hope you enjoy cancer, because with environmental policies like these, that’s what you’re getting!

Environmentalism is not just about hugging trees and swimming with whales. That is a bunch of hippy bullshit.

Neither is it about taking away jobs. Every industry can be made environmentally safe.

Environmentalism is about

  • being able to breathe outside without a gas mask
  • being able to raise your children to adulthood without them being poisoned from their water
  • living past the age of 30 without getting six kinds of cancer

This is not an exaggeration, unfortunately!

Iraq on the Record

The Iraq on the Record report, prepared at the request of Rep. Henry A. Waxman, is a comprehensive examination of the statements made by the five Administration officials most responsible for providing public information and shaping public opinion on Iraq: President George W. Bush, Vice President Richard Cheney, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin Powell, and National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice.

ClearChannel = FCC = Conservative Stooge

Surely you’ve heard a little about Howard Stern recently. “Shock Jock Fined.” Yeah what else is new?

The thing you won’t hear about much is why he was fined- for a show over 3 years ago. The FCC has taken a sudden interest in Howard Stern. ClearChannel recently dropped him from all of their stations… which sounds a lot more impressive than it actually is, since they were only carrying him on 6 stations.

But we knew Stern’s content, and they did too. Why the sudden change?

A little while ago Stern decided he had had enough and spoke out about President Bush. Stern urged his listeners to vote against Bush. This from a guy who publicly supported the “War on Terror” and the invasion of Iraq. Coincidentally, three days later ClearChannel decided Stern’s show was “indecent” and dropped him.

It’s yet another chapter in stating the obvious: radio and television stations have been merged down to a very small number of companies that control the large majority of the broadcasting band. They are all controlled by Republican-friendly businesses, and are all too willing to act as the voicebox of the present administration.

CBS refused to air a commercial from MoveOn.org during the Superbowl, claiming that MoveOn were without the money to pay for the ad. This of course was an outright lie- online donations easily surpassed the cost of that advertising spot. The television stations are not impartial and do not tell us the truth.

The solution: turn off your TV and do something productive with your life. Go out with your friends so they don’t waste their lives either! I can pretty much guarantee you will never hear someone say this:

MAN ON DEATHBED
Wow, I sure am glad I watched every episode of Survivor!

Something I think is amazing- broadcasters wonder where their share is going when they pull these shenanigans.

RADIOMAN FRANK
Yay all our stations are finally totally identical!

RADIOMAN BOB
That’s a big cost savings for us! And yet… our numbers aren’t that much better! I don’t get it!

RADIOMAN FRANK
Well, the ratings are still going down… People are turning away from radio, Bob. But I wonder why? Why is radio in the toilet? It just doesn’t make sense!

RADIOMAN BOB
Let’s see, we have a 5 song playlist, plastic DJs, commercials every 5 minutes, and filled the airwaves with lies and hate, supporting a government that sends dozens of the friends of our listeners to their graves.

RADIOMAN FRANK
What does any of that have to do with anything?! Let’s stay on task, Bob!

RADIOMAN BOB
Let’s lobby the FCC to crack down on smaller broadcasters! Maybe that will make things better!

RADIOMAN FRANK
Right on brah- once we get rid of pirate radio, college stations, and swallow up more of the private stations, I’m sure things will get better and we won’t be so amazingly irrelevant! Everything can be exactly as bland as we like it!

RADIOMAN BOB
But first! The whores!

WHORES
Woooooo!

More on the FCC: On Oprah yesterday at 4pm, a show aired live in which a guest described some of the sex acts teenagers are doing now, I guess referred to in the film Thirteen, including the “tossed salad” as made famous by Chris Rock (it’s a variant of rimming, guys). This was on Oprah. Do you think she got fined?

So to highlight the hypocrisy, Stern wanted to play a clip from Oprah that aired live yesterday. I say wanted because his producers refused. Stern’s idea was to play the clip and dare the FCC to fine him… because then they would have to fine Oprah. Which would make them look very stupid. And if they fined just him, and not Oprah, the favoritism would be obvious. And if they didn’t fine him for that, and fined him for something else… well you get the general idea.

There is a lot of support for Howard Stern. Las Vegas station KXTE has been airing regular appeals to their listeners to get the word out, and rock group Korn wrote a song about Stern and ClearChannel (also available on the KXTE site).

Maybe Howard Stern will make good on his threat to leave radio and migrate his show to Satellite Radio… personally I think this would be giving up.

Also, this seems largely a case of “too little, too late.” Where was Howard Stern when the rest of us were protesting the war? When we let the Supreme Court hand the presidency to someone who got his brother to rig the election for him? Broadcasters edited in the sound of boos to a speech Michael Moore made, turning his anti-war speech into conservative propaganda… but did Howard Stern complain then? Noooooooo!

Did you know that a lot of college and indie stations have live web feeds?

Try it, you’ll like it! Pick up the schedule and find your genre!

College stations truly offer what commercial radio cannot- variety. So if you only think you want different kinds of music, maybe you’d be better off stealing the new Britney album. Have fun at the mall, Barbie!

Chicken Micro-lending

While reading
Fast Food Nation I came up with an idea, which I am seriously considering putting together.

There are abandoned poulty houses in Arkansas. Like a lot of them. Tyson Foods, a huge chicken processor, shrewdly owns chickens but no chicken farms- they pass on all the capital risk and labor to independent contractors, usually small farmers. These contractors generally have to take out a huge loan, spend $150k on a poultry house, and about half of them go bankrupt. That’s a lot of abandoned poultry houses.

Soo… remember Banker to the Poor and the Grameen Bank? They have a fisheries project- there was a giant abandoned fishery and they took it over, staffed by small businesspeople loaned money by the bank. So why couldn’t we do that in Arkansas?

Of course, as with all of my projects, I am always looking for guidance or volunteers. If you know anything about finance, nonprofit organizations, chickens, or the business of poultry production, drop me a line!

Steps to accomplish this project:

  1. Contact Eric Schlosser
(author of Fast Food Nation) for a quick pointer to his sources for the actual locations of these bankrupt farms
  2. Contact local AR banks and see who has the best deal on abandoned poultry farm foreclosures… preferably near unemployed people
  3. Research the legal structure of the Grameen fisheries project-
    • How is it connected to Grameen Bank?

    • How much do the debtors own of the fisheries?
  4. Contact the micro-lending programs in AR and get their involvement
  5. Market & Logistical concerns:
    • Who would the resulting chickens be sold to? Maybe a side loan involving small restaurants?
    • How does one transport chickens and chicken products economically on a small scale?
    • Is the chicken market as a whole improving or degrading?
    • Is the organic chicken market improving share?
    • What are the tradeoffs in making a chicken operation organic? Free range?
    • Could we alternatively combine this effort with agricultural research? Companion farming? Alternately, GM chickens?
  6. Environmental concerns:
    • How do we minimize / reuse the waste generated by a chicken farm?
    • How do we guard the local water supply from pollution?
    • Can we grow the chicken feed on the lot? How about a crop which improves the soil?

  7. Write some grants!
  8. research recruitment methods of Grameen to get people to run this thing

House of Bush, House of Saud

House of Bush, House of Saud begins with a politically explosive question: How is it that two days after 9/11, when U.S. air traffic was tightly restricted, 140 Saudis, many immediate kin to Osama Bin Laden, were permitted to leave the country without being questioned by U.S. intelligence?

Isn’t that interesting? Almost as interesting as the “why are we in Iraq” question.

Well? To combat terrorism? There was and is no link between Saddam Hussein and Al Queda. Really! Look it up! To defend against WMDs? Have you read the news lately? I mean from sources that have actual information in them; not just quotes from drug-addict hypocrite Rush Limbaugh.

Go! crack a book! Prove me wrong!
