{"id":6487,"date":"2012-12-28T16:05:56","date_gmt":"2012-12-28T23:05:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ikillspies.com\/blog\/?p=6487"},"modified":"2013-01-30T11:58:33","modified_gmt":"2013-01-30T18:58:33","slug":"mpdg-and-loss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.ikillspies.com\/?p=6487","title":{"rendered":"MPDG and Loss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BRAIN: but my earlier question is more about what I think the harder part is:  writing the guy<br \/>\nNIKK: Isn&#8217;t he supposed to be a one-dimensional shell of a person?<br \/>\nPJ: I was about to say, it depends on the goal<br \/>\nPJ: is the guy the male version of the &#8220;mary sue&#8221; thing, or do you actually *want* an interesting character<br \/>\nBRAIN: the goal is: write a script that you can sell starring one male actor and one female actor who are both in their early 20s<\/p>\n<p>BRAIN: even mary sue wants to go do something<br \/>\nPJ: true<br \/>\nBRAIN: so what does brooding guy want?<br \/>\nBRAIN: why are they on a road odyssey?<br \/>\nPJ: I was about to say they&#8217;re going to comic con, but then we essentially have fallen into the script of &#8216;<A href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0050PYNO4\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B0050PYNO4&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=ghosthouse01-20\">Paul<\/a>&#8216;<br \/>\nBRAIN: ha<\/p>\n<p>BRAIN: so you said something about getting dumped in the beginning, and I think that is a good point- these guys usually have some failure or loss just before the start of the story<br \/>\nBRAIN: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000FC2FQU\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B000FC2FQU&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=ghosthouse01-20\">Garden State<\/a> &#8211; his dad died<br \/>\nBRAIN: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0056JHBNE\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B0056JHBNE&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=ghosthouse01-20\">Elizabethtown<\/a> &#8211; he&#8217;s destroyed Nike<br \/>\nPJ: right<br \/>\nPJ: given the loss, the reason for the trip is they&#8217;re going some place to re-start, re-charge<br \/>\nBRAIN: ah, and the MPDG is symbolic of that new, carefree direction<br \/>\nBRAIN: full of potential<br \/>\nPJ: but returning home is pretty played out, weather it&#8217;s to do the funeral, go to a high school class reunion (grosse pointe blank\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6?) etc are all pretty played out<\/p>\n<p>NIKK: Could always reverse it\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<br \/>\nNIKK: MPDG instead of making him &#8216;better&#8217; drags him down from success and happiness into complete and total life destruction.<br \/>\nNIKK: The entire movie is just a downward spiral\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<br \/>\nBRAIN: that sort of has been done &#8211; the one with ben stiller and jen aniston<br \/>\nBRAIN: also &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B001DCZ4IW\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B001DCZ4IW&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=ghosthouse01-20\">Harold and Maude<\/a>&#8221;<br \/>\nBRAIN: (the downward spiral)<br \/>\nMATT: Harold and Maude is unfortunately the Ur-MPDG movie, but it also is good, unlike pretty much all the rest of them.<br \/>\nBRAIN: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000I3UMKM\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B000I3UMKM&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=ghosthouse01-20\">Breakfast at Tiffany&#8217;s<\/a> has a pretty destructive MPDG<br \/>\nNIKK: \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 huh \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 Does that mean that Going Postal is MPDG\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BRAIN: but my earlier question is more about what I think the harder part is: writing the guy NIKK: Isn&#8217;t he supposed to be a one-dimensional shell of a person?
