\nMATT: You know what I’m in the mood for? Celtic punk.
\nBRAIN: Name a band
\nMATT: Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys…
\nBRAIN: ew
\nBRAIN: Bro “punk”
\nMATT: They’re not real punk, no.<\/p>\n

BRAIN: I think Me First and the Gimme Gimmes is more punk than Flogging Molly
\nMATT: This is probably true!
\nMATT: They’re also too musically capable to be an actual punk band.
\nMATT: I hear more than three chords!
\nBRAIN: not authentic! too much musicianship!!
\nBRAIN: awesome
\nMATT: They’re a seven-piece band! That’s not punk.<\/p>\n

BRAIN: I love hearing that kind of statment, although “that’s not metal” sounds funnier than “that’s not punk”
\nBRAIN: “so not metal dude”
\nBRAIN: I had a sort of joking conversation about that with a 12 year old over the weekend
\nBRAIN: he was telling me how great Metallica is<\/p>\n

MATT: Jethro Tull = “so not metal”
\nBRAIN: yeah Jethro Tull is not metal
\nBRAIN: anything filk is pretty not metal
\nMATT: Unless you’re the Grammys.<\/p>\n

BRAIN: I think Kraftwerk made it into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?
\nMATT: So did James Taylor!
\nBRAIN: trying to think of anything James Taylor did that I know that could be considered “Rock”
\nMATT: You will not be able to succeed.
\nBRAIN: ok I give up then<\/p>\n

MATT: Claims of punk authenticity are less funny than claims of metal authenticity, because metal started as ridiculous bombast.<\/p>\n

BRAIN: totally
\nBRAIN: The Darkness : metal or no?
\nBRAIN: they are pretty ridiculous, but that doesn’t make them not metal
\nMATT: They are like meta-metal!
\nMATT: They are so metal, it stops being metal and then comes around and starts again!
\nBRAIN: yeah, The Darkness is definitely metal informed by metal itself<\/p>\n

MATT: I saw Tenacious D in concert over the summer, speaking of meta-metal.
\nBRAIN: oh right!
\nBRAIN: I love their song\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6
\nBRAIN: The Metal<\/p>\n

MATT: Yes!
\nBRAIN: it’s about Metal<\/p>\n

MATT: I put forward the hypothesis that Kyle Gass is the dumpiest looking dude to achieve worshipped rockstar status.
\nBRAIN: who worships Kyle Gass?!<\/p>\n

MATT: Okay, rephrased – the dumpiest looking dude to have 30,000 people screaming excitedly for him while he plays guitar.
\nBRAIN: here is a picture of rock star “Meatloaf”<\/a>
\nMATT: But he had the whole operatic look going, which you can do while being a big guy.
\nMATT: KG wears shorts and t-shirts.
\nMATT: Meatloaf was like 70’s rock’s Pavarotti.
\nBRAIN: wow<\/p>\n

BRAIN: remember that Meatloaf PBS Holiday Special?
\nBRAIN: I still order copies of it during pledge breaks
\nMATT: I am not aware of this special. But I think I might be okay with that gap in my knowledge.
\nBRAIN: it doesn’t exist
\nBRAIN: in our universe
\nBRAIN: yet!!!<\/p>\n

MATT: There are innumerable universes where it does exist, though!
\nBRAIN: yeah I think the Dalai Lama said that
