Shoppers may get some great deals on the contents of these bags &#8211; even if they don&#8217;t know what exactly they&#8217;re buying.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>BRAIN: oh right<br \/>\nBRAIN: like a grab bag<br \/>\nOJ: yeah<br \/>\nBRAIN: we have that at <i><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Obon\">Obon<\/a><\/i><br \/>\nBRAIN: except since it&#8217;s so americanized I never knew the japanese name for it&#8230; (plus I hadn&#8217;t done it for new years)<br \/>\nOJ: there is something in singapore called a &#8220;lucky dip&#8221;<br \/>\nOJ: which is a raffle thing<br \/>\nOJ: you buy a ticket (5 or 50 or whatever dollars), get a draw and a number<\/p>\n<p>OJ: Japan celebrates NY on 1\/1 correct?<br \/>\nBRAIN: yes<br \/>\nBRAIN: you have to clean your house<br \/>\nBRAIN: and have friends over<br \/>\nBRAIN: with a lot of food available<br \/>\nBRAIN: generally there&#8217;s some enka awards on TV<\/p>\n<p>OJ: interesting, so similar to some of the chinese traditions for lunar new year<br \/>\nBRAIN: what happens for that?<br \/>\nOJ: lots of diff traditions depending on rural village<br \/>\nOJ: common ones include: big meal, or vegetarian meal<br \/>\nOJ: clean house<br \/>\nOJ: pay off debts<br \/>\nOJ: eat oranges or pineapples (pun on words)<br \/>\nOJ: &#8220;lucky money&#8221; \/ &#8220;red envelopes&#8221; from married people to kids (nieces\/nephews also)<\/p>\n<p>BRAIN: related: I found out recently what you do with your <i><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Daruma_doll\">daruma<\/a><\/i> after the eyes are filled in &#8211; you burn it at the temple at the end of the year<br \/>\nOJ: oh&#8230; interesting<br \/>\nOJ: i want a Hello Kitty daruma but i won&#8217;t fill it in or burn it<br \/>\nOJ: unless hmm, i had extras<br \/>\nBRAIN: so what, she&#8217;d just be eyeless forever?<br \/>\nOJ: yah<br \/>\nBRAIN: so so sad<br \/>\nOJ: well u fill in one eye?<br \/>\nOJ: or you hae one with both, but don&#8217;t make a wish<br \/>\nBRAIN: what!<br \/>\nBRAIN: a free ride for HK daruma?!<br \/>\nBRAIN: wtf, that&#8217;s even worse!<br \/>\nBRAIN: you commie!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OJ: hey what is that japanese New Years lucky bag word?
