{"id":5078,"date":"2004-02-13T12:57:48","date_gmt":"2004-02-13T20:57:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ikillspies.com\/blog\/2004\/02\/13\/5078\/"},"modified":"2004-02-13T12:57:48","modified_gmt":"2004-02-13T20:57:48","slug":"solar-panels-on-your-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.ikillspies.com\/?p=5078","title":{"rendered":"Solar Panels on your House"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What would you have to do to make your house entirely solar-powered?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/millionsolarroofs.com\/\">Million Solar Roofs<\/a> is a site run by the Department of Energy which has a lot of information about doing this<\/lI><br \/>\n<lI><a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlantisenergy.org\/\">Atlantis<\/a> makes special tiles which have solar panels embedded in them:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A typical installation of 216 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlantisenergy.org\/SUNSLATESFAQ.html\">Sunslates<\/a>\u00c2\u00ae (about 300 square feet \/ 28 square meters) will cover from 60 to 80% of your power needs. The roof is installed by your local roofer and the electrical work is done by your local electrician.<\/p>\n<p \/>\nThat said, your roofing and electrical contractors will on average be charging $12,000 per 100 square feet( there is just over 1kW per 100 square feet) or $12.00 per watt.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/lI><\/p>\n<li>For Northern California, you can call <a href=\"http:\/\/akeena.net\/\">Akeena Solar<\/a>&#8230;  they install solar panels.  In addition they are North American Board of Certified Energy Practioners Certified  PV Installer\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s<\/lI>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Paying for it:  I got most of these off of the CA section of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dsireusa.org\/library\/includes\/map2.cfm?CurrentPageID=1&#38;State=CA\">DSIRE<\/a> site.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerenergycenter.org\/renewable\/tax_credit.html\">California Revenue &#38; Taxation Code \u00c2\u00a7 17053.84<\/a> &#8211;<br \/>\nAfter January 1, 2004 and before January 1, 2006, a credit of 7.5 percent of the cost of an installed solar energy system will be available.<\/p>\n<p \/>\nThe California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) administers the program in consultation with the California Energy Commission (Commission). The solar or wind system must be certified by the Commission. A five-year warranty is required of each system. Taxpayers claiming the credit cannot sell the electricity produced by the system, but may utilize California&#8217;s net metering law, if eligible. <\/p>\n<p \/>\n<\/lI><\/p>\n<li><a href=\"  http:\/\/www.consumerenergycenter.org\/erprebate\/index.html\">Emerging Renewables Rebate Program<\/a> (ERP) replaces the Emerging Renewables Buydown Program (ERBP), a program of the California Energy Commission.\n<p \/>\n<p>The following system requirements will apply: &nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>must be grid connected; &nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>electricity production is not to exceed 200% of the site&#8217;s historical or current electricity needs; &nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>the equipment retailer must provide a 5-year warranty; &nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>systems\/components must meet national standards; &nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>only new equipment is eligible; &nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>systems must be installed by licensed contractors or owner-installed; &nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>all systems must be installed with a performance meter; and<\/li>\n<li>system audits will be conducted by the Energy Commission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p \/>\n<\/li>\n<p><lI><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pge.com\/selfgen\/\">PG&#38;E SELFGEN<\/a> program- there is no money left for this program!  Also, it is aimed primarily at businesses.  Looks like you have to apply to this plan in order to sell power back to the grid?<\/p>\n<p \/><\/li>\n<p><lI>there is a  California Property Tax Exemption for Solar Systems  described in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dsireusa.org\/library\/docs\/incentives\/CA25F.htm\">CA Revenue and Taxation Code, Section 73 <\/a>.  Expiring in 2006, it basically says that the solar power system has no property taxes associated with it.<\/p>\n<p \/><\/lI><\/p>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What would you have to do to make your house entirely solar-powered?
