My elementary school, Ohlone, was founded on many of the same principles Totto-chan&#8217;s school Tomoe Gakkuen was.  Our teachers would read us stories from this book in fourth grade and even before.<\/p>\n<p \/>\nJapanese talk-show host Tetsuko Kuroyanagi reminisces about her elementary school, Tomoe, but entirely in the third person, as a children&#8217;s book.  The teaching philosophy of its founder and principal, Sosaku Kobayashi, is inspiring.  <\/p>\n<p \/>\nTotto-chan has the kinds of adventures we all have as children, digging up entire cesspools and helping her polio-stricken friend how to climb a tree.  Well, some of us have those adventures anyway&#8230;  Your childhood may be squandered already, but it&#8217;s not too late to live vicariously through Totto-chan!<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Totto-chan%2C_the_Little_Girl_at_the_Window\">Entry in Wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>Here are my notes on the things I found in this book:<\/p>\n<p><uL><\/p>\n<li>Tomoe Gakuen 1937-1945\n<ul>\n<li>destroyed by fire in 1945\n<\/li>\n<li>southwest Tokyo\n<\/li>\n<li>3 minute walk from Jiyugaoka Station on the Toyoko Line\n<\/li>\n<li>lot now occupied by Peacock market\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Sosaku Kobayashi  ( june 18 1893- 1963)\n<ul>\n<li>born near Mount Haruna in Gumma Prefecture\n<\/li>\n<li>assistant schoolteacher  as a teenager after only elementary education\n<\/li>\n<li>combined teaching with music studies\n<\/li>\n<li>proponent of Eurythmics\n<\/li>\n<li>entered what is now the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music, graduated\n<\/li>\n<li>music instructor at Seikei Elementary School, founded by Haruki Nakamura\n<\/li>\n<li>wrote a children&#8217;s operetta- this got the attention of Baron Iwasaki (of the family who founded Mitsubishi)- who sent him to Europe\n<\/li>\n<li> Baron Iwasaki also sponsored Kos&#231;ak Yamada, &#8220;doyen of Japanese composers&#8221;\n<\/li>\n<li>Kobayashi in Europe 1922-1924, studying with Swiss compooser Emile Jaques-Dalcrroze in Paris.\n<\/li>\n<li>Kobayashi establishes Seijo Kindergarten\n<\/li>\n<li>1930 back to Europe\n<\/li>\n<li>established the Japan Eurythmics Association\n<\/li>\n<li>worked with the Kunitachi College of Music\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Swiss compooser Emile Jaques-Dalcroze\n<ul>\n<li>Euryhmics, 1904\n<\/li>\n<li>influenced many Japanese artists:\n<\/li>\n<li>Kos&#231;ak Yamada\n<\/li>\n<li>Baku Ishii (pioneer of modern dance in Japan)\n<\/li>\n<li>Kabuki actor Ichikawa Sadanji II\n<\/li>\n<li>Kaoru Asannai (modern drama pioneer)\n<\/li>\n<li>Michio Ito (dancer)\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Chihiro Iwasaki ( &#8211; 1974 )\n<ul>\n<li>Chihiro Iwasaki Museum of Picture Books in Shimo-shakuji, Nerima-ku, Tokyo\n<\/li>\n<li>curated by playwright Tadasu Iizawa\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><i>tsukuda-ni<\/i> (tiny crustaceans and the like boiled in soy sauce and sweet sake)\n<\/li>\n<li><i>kinpira gobo<\/i> (spicy burdock)\n<\/li>\n<li><i>nori<\/i>\n<\/li>\n<li><i>chikuwa<\/i> (fish rolls)\n<\/li>\n<li><i>denbu<\/i>\n<\/li>\n<li><i>itadakimasu!<\/i>\n<\/li>\n<li>Kuhonbutsu Temple\n<\/li>\n<li>Josef Rosenstock &#8211; Jewish refugee conductor\n<\/li>\n<li>Kos&#231;ak Yamada\n<\/li>\n<li><i>kingyo<\/i> vendor &#8211; apparently there used to be goldfish vendors who would roam around with carts selling goldfish!\n<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Seaside School&#8221; field trip &#8211;  Toi Spa (hot spring on ocean)<br \/>\n<uL><\/p>\n<li>on the Izu Peninsula in Shiuoka\n<\/li>\n<li>ferry from Numazu\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>poet Basho:<br \/>\n<blockquote><p>Listen! a frog<br \/>\nJumping into the silence<br \/>\nOf an ancient pond!\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>Senzoku Pond has an island with a shrine on it-<br \/>\ndedicated to Benten, goddess of beauty and music (also a character in Urusei Yatsura)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>poet Issa Kobayashi<br \/>\n<blockquote><p>Lean Frog,<br \/>\nDon&#8217;t you surrender!<br \/>\nHere&#8217;s Issa by you<\/p>\n<p \/>\nFeldgling Sparrows!<br \/>\nMake way, make way,<br \/>\nWay for the noble Horse!<\/p>\n<p \/>\nSpare the Fly!<br \/>\nWringing his hands, wringing his feet,<br \/>\nHe implores your mercy!<\/p>\n<p \/>\nThe snow thaws-<br \/>\nAnd suddenly the whole village<br \/>\nIs full of children!\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>Kuhonbutsu Temple\n<\/li>\n<li>station Midorigaoka &#8211; on the way to school on the Oimachi line\n<\/li>\n<li>5-sen coin &#8211; before the war, a yen was divided into sen\n<\/li>\n<li>47 Ronin &#8211; chushingura &#8211; an incredibly violent national epic about loyalty and self-sacrifice.\n<ul>\n<li>Lord Asano\n<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;I, Rihei Amanoya, am a man!&#8221; &#8211; accessory merchant who did not narc\n<\/li>\n<li>Sengakuji Temple\n<\/li>\n<li>Kuhonbutsu  Temple\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Hideo Saito, cellist, friend of &#8220;daddy&#8221;\n<\/li>\n<li>Shiga highlands\n<\/li>\n<li>The skiing star that Totto-chan rides with, &#8220;Schneider,&#8221;<br \/>\nis likely Austrian skiing legend Hannes Schneider, who left Nazi-occupied Austria in 1939 for the US.
