{"id":4762,"date":"2003-11-12T12:54:57","date_gmt":"2003-11-12T20:54:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ikillspies.com\/blog\/2003\/11\/12\/4762\/"},"modified":"2003-11-12T12:54:57","modified_gmt":"2003-11-12T20:54:57","slug":"flexible-displays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.ikillspies.com\/?p=4762","title":{"rendered":"Flexible Displays"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More for <a href=\"http:\/\/captainsaxby.com\/\">Mr Saxby<\/a> and his art installation.  <\/p>\n<p \/>\nThis time the emphasis is on the next step up from the passively-lit medium of electronic paper: Organic LEDs enable &#8220;Flexible Displays,&#8221; which are &#8220;emissive&#8221;- they have their own light source (thus they require more power) but can therefore be seen in the dark.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The folks at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.universaldisplay.com\/tech.php\">Universal Display<\/a> have a set of 3 offerings based on Organic LEDs (&#8220;OLEDs&#8221;):\n<ul>\n<li><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.universaldisplay.com\/foled.php\">Flexible OLED<\/a> (FOLED)<\/b> is flexible and lightweight, and could be used for giant TVs on a wall<\/li>\n<li><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.universaldisplay.com\/toled.php\">Transparent OLED<\/a> (TOLED)<\/b> is transparent, and visible from only a single face- so like a HUD on a car windshield<\/li>\n<li><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.universaldisplay.com\/soled.php\">Stacked OLED<\/a> (SOLED)<\/b> is made of multiple TOLEDs for full color and higher resolution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>UK-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdtltd.co.uk\/\">Cambridge Display Technology<\/a> has a technology called Light Emitting Polymer- LEP.  However I couldn&#8217;t find any further info on this technology while surfing their site!<\/li>\n<li>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eetimes.com\/story\/OEG20021030S0020\">this article from EE Times<\/a> from 2002, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dupont.com\/displays\/\">DuPont Displays<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sarnoff.com\/\">Sarnoff Corp.<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bell-labs.com\/\">Bell Labs<\/a> are working on a flexible organic TFT technology.  Here&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lucent.com\/news_events\/articles\/021115.html\">press release from Lucent<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usdc.org\/\">US Display Consortium<\/a> has been funnelling money into OLED research recently, mainly for military applications&#8230;  They also host the Flexible Display Initiative (FDI).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More for Mr Saxby and his art installation.
