I had always called these things &#8220;<i>manju<\/i>,&#8221; but I was corrected and told they were &#8220;baby <i>kasutera<\/i>.&#8221;  I have since done a little more investigation.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>  The general phrase <i>wagashi<\/i> refers to the whole class of Japanese sweets.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<i>Kasutera<\/i> is the Japanese rendering of &#8220;castella,&#8221; apparently a type of sponge cake.  They are in a subclass of <i>wagashi<\/i> called <i>yakigashi<\/i>, &#8220;grilled sweets.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p \/>\nThe type of <i>wagashi<\/i> I am used to is called <i>namagashi<\/i> &#8211; &#8220;fresh sweets.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most of what I make and consume at home are various kinds of <i>dango<\/i> (simple sweetened pounded rice), or <\/li>\n<li><i>daifuku-mochi<\/i> (the kind with the <i>anko<\/i> inside).<\/lI>\n<li>  I already knew &#8220;<i>yokan<\/i>,&#8221; solid bars of bean jelly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Toraya&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toraya-america.com\/wagashi_nama.html\"><i>Namagashi<\/i> of the month<\/a><\/lI>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/o132.zkes.tn.edu.tw\/vc\/vc99\/japan\/snacks\/namagashi.html\"><i>Jo-namagashi<\/i><\/a> page made by Japanese students, hosted in Taiwan (?!?)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wagashi.or.jp\/\">Japan <i>Wagashi<\/i> Association<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Kitchoan&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kitchoan.com\/E\/index.html\"><i>wagashi<\/i> page<\/a><\/li>\n<p><lI><a href=\"http:\/\/www.h2.dion.ne.jp\/~wagashi\/\">Daimatsu World<\/a> has some links- apparently this guy makes <i>wagashi<\/i> for a living.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.h2.dion.ne.jp\/~wagashi\/galleryfuyu.htm\">winter<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.h2.dion.ne.jp\/~wagashi\/gallery%20haru.htm\">spring<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.h2.dion.ne.jp\/~wagashi\/gallerynatsu.htm\">summer<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.h2.dion.ne.jp\/~wagashi\/galleryaki.htm\">fall<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.h2.dion.ne.jp\/~wagashi\/wagashi-2.htm\">other<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I was in Tokyo a while ago with my friends, we bought a bag of little grilled cakes with sweet beans inside.
